CHRISTMAS hymns and carols filled St Herbert's RC Church in Chadderton on Tuesday during the Oldham Police Division's annual carol service.

Officers, inspectors, police cadets and special constables from across the borough were joined by musicians from the Greater Manchester Police Band and children from St Herbert's School during the special evening service.

In attendance were Mayor of Oldham Councillor Derek Heffernan, who also read the first reading, and Superintendent Danny Inglis, who gave a thank you at the end of the evening.

Following a welcome by Father Peter McKie from St Herbert's Church, guests sang carols including O Come All Ye Faithful, We Three Kings of Orient Are and Away in a Manger, while prayers were led by Father Dermot Heakin, Divisional Chaplain.

A collection was also taken in aid of Royton-based Dr Kershaw's Hospice and the North West Benevolent Fund, a charity which helps officers and their families in times of crisis.
