Traffic halted as woman hit by lorry

A WOMAN was taken to hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a lorry on Manchester Road yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to reports of a collision involving a lorry and a woman shortly before 3pm.

The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and police closed the road between Edward Street and Chapel Road, on the Werneth/Chadderton border.

The lorry stopped at the scene and no arrests were made.

A police spokeswoman said: "We were called to Manchester Road shortly before 3pm to reports of a crash between a lorry and a woman.

"The woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition. No-one has been arrested following the crash."

The incident caused long delays and one motorist describing the area as "like a car park".

Bus routes were diverted via Hollins Road/Copster Hill Road, Ashton Road in both directions.

Oldham Council urged motorist to stay clear of the area, they tweeted: "Serious incident Manchester Road. Road closed in both directions, diversions in place. Please avoid the area."
