£1,000 penalty for fly-tipping

Date published: 16 January 2012

A WOMAN who left rubbish in a Werneth street has paid almost £1,000 in fines and costs for fly-tipping.

Oldham Council prosecuted Nicole Wheeldon of Stanley Road, Chadderton, over rubbish dumped in Lynn Street, Werneth. Wheeldon had passed it to other people who had tipped it.

She was fined £350 and ordered to pay costs of £550, as well as a victim surcharge of £15.

The council has been stepping up efforts to ensure that people do not commit the offence, with officers actively seek out fly-tipping.

Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for neighbourhoods said: “All households are responsible for the proper disposal of their own household waste. It costs money to clear waste like this.”

In 2010 Oldham Council spent £400,000 clearing up tipped rubbish.

Residents can report fly-tipping to 0161-770 6644 or by e-mailing contact@oldham.gov.uk
