Anyone for tennis?

WIMBLEDON may be over, but Oldhamers can serve up an ace with free sessions to celebrate the Great British Tennis Weekend.

Oldham Council has teamed up with tennis clubs across the borough to offer free taster sessions this Saturday and Sunday as part of the Lawn Tennis Association’s initiative to get more people, of all ages, playing the game.

Council-run parks, as well as Failsworth Sports Campus and Tame Valley Tennis Club will host free court sessions, coaching and mini tennis events.

Those taking part will also have the chance to try out the newly-launched Cardio Tennis Fitness classes and Tennis Express sessions, designed to teach the game to adult beginners.

Volunteers and coaches will be on hand to help out and there will be racquets and balls to borrow so all you need is a pair of trainers.

Councillor Jenny Harrison, cabinet member for adult social care and public health, said: “Tennis is a fantastic way to stay fit and active and the top-class facilities we have in Oldham mean that people of all ages and abilities have the chance to play.

“You may not have picked up a racquet before or perhaps your child is looking for a new hobby, why not start this weekend.

There are 15 council-run parks with courts across the borough that are open daily to members of the public free of charge.

The council’s sports development team and Friends of Dunwood Park, with lottery cash funding, boosted the Shaw park’s facilities last year and the well-used Alexandra Park has seven public tennis courts, including two of county standard.
