A BROADCAST journalism student who hopes to emulate Oldham’s own BBC 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw has been given £3,000 to further her studies.

Hazera Bibi from Chadderton, is one of 20 students who will be helped by the Royal Television Society’s (RTS) new bursary scheme, which aims to open the media industry to more people from different backgrounds.

Hazera attended the Radclyffe School before a media studies course at Oldham College. She is now in the first year of a broadcast journalism degree at Huddersfield University.

The 18 year old wants to be a TV or radio presenter and is a big fan of breakfast host “Grimmy”, who attended Our Lady’s High School in Royton.

As well as the bursary, Hazera will receive mentoring and membership of both the RTS and the the Hospital Club, a members’ club for those in the creative industries.

“I was very excited when I got the call to say I had been awarded the bursary — it will make a huge difference,” she explained.

“It’s very difficult to make contacts in the media industry and it will allow me to meet new people and get my name out there.”
