Couple’s joy is tinged with sadness

THE first couple in Oldham to have a civil partnership have become the first to convert it into a marriage — but their union was tinged with sadness.

Mary Tomlinson-Harrison (71) was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer almost a month ago but was still determined to marry Judith Tomlinson-Harrison (66) at Chadderton Town Hall.

In 2005, when civil partnerships were brought into law, the couple even beat Elton John to the register office.

Now, nine years later and celebrating 40 years together, they have been the first in the borough to convert that partnership into same-sex marriage.

Judith said: “This is something that we have always wanted. It is total equality and it’s the final piece of the jigsaw.

“It is really important to make sure that we are the same as everyone else.”

Unfortunately, the couple, and Mary’s son Martin Harrison who acted as a witness, were not able to celebrate with a big ceremony because of Mary’s illness.

Mary said: “Right now I feel fine and not ill but I’m on quite strong medication and often a little disorientated.

“I have been told my cancer is inoperable and have been offered chemotherapy and palliative care so far.

“We’re waiting for a call from my oncologist to find out what the next step is.

“The illness has taken some of the shine off the ceremony but it has also made it even more important.

“I’m determined to keep going for as long as possible.”
