Club ‘in ruin’ but events go on

PEOPLE are being urged to support a social club which is in “financial ruin”.

The steward and caretaker manager of Stanley Road Sports and Social Club, Chadderton, stressed the building is open, despite fears for its future and rumours of cancelled events.

Jeff Hadaway said the club — sold to a developer — is safe for up to 12 months. After that he believes the owner might sell the building.

He said: “The club has been in financial ruin. We have outstanding debts and we’re going through an audit to find out what we can do. We have formed a new committee which is trying to put right things.”

Concerns about the club’s future were raised by the organisers of the fifth annual Soul4Heroes charity event, being held at the venue on Sunday.

Organiser Graham Anderson, owner of Treble Darts and Trophies in Yorkshire Street, Oldham, started to worry when he struggled to contact Mr Hadaway. He has since been assured the event will go ahead.

The annual Soul4Heroes event has raised £8,200 for Help for Heroes over the past four years.

The event runs from from 1pm-11pm. A packed line-up of DJs will be playing Northern Soul, Motown and reggae throughout the day.
