Talks continue over ‘dangerous’ mill access

Date published: 12 August 2015

PROPOSALS to improve access and increase highway safety around Chadderton Mill are being discussed ollowing concerns from residents about “dangerous” turns made by lorry drivers visiting the site.

Residents on neighbouring Fields New Road and Denton Lane urged Oldham Council to intervene after seeing 40-tonne goods lorries mount the pavement as they squeezed down a narrow access road.

Some are concerned their parked cars might be damaged, while others are worried about the heavy lorries coming within centimetres of homes and shops.

Meetings between residents, the council, the mill managers and current occupiers MSL (UK) have continued since June.

Councillor David Hibbert, cabinet member for transport, said: “The council is working closely with the mill owners and residents. It’s proposed that additional parking will be made available by the mill owners, access will be improved and highways restrictions will be put in place. We’re working hard to strike a balance, but we also have to ensure the safety of residents.”
