THE roof of a double decker was ripped off after crashing into a bridge in Middleton, on the border of Chadderton.

The Stagecoach bus became stuck after colliding with the railway bridge between Joshua Lane and Mills Hill Road last night.

Eyewitnesses say the top of the vehicle was almost 'sliced off' completely.

GMP Traffic officers tweeted about the incident. They wrote: "Big recover bill and 1 less bus on the roads. Joshua Road, Middleton".

One passing driver, who saw the double decker stuck fast under the bridge, said: "The damage was really bad.

"The entire roof was sliced off completely.

"I just hope it was empty at the time.

"I can't understand why a bus of that size would be travelling under that bridge.

"It's a very low bridge."

A spokesperson for Stagecoach said: "We can confirm that a Stagecoach bus was involved in an incident at about 7pm. It took place on Joshua Lane in Middleton as an out of service bus was returning to the nearby depot.

"There were no passengers on board at the time and no one was injured.

"Safety is our absolute priority and we are assisting police with their inquiries as well as carrying out our own investigation into the incident."
