148 homes plan gets green light

PLANS to build 148 houses in the Derker housing market renewal area have been given the green light.

The scheme, for London Road, is part of a masterplan to replace 205 terrace houses and breathe new life into the area. The transformation will see a mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom houses, and around one-third will be what is described as “affordable housing.” The development will be carried out by Bellways Homes Ltd in partnership with the council and Guinness Northern Counties Housing Association. Part of Afghan Park will be lost, but the lesser density of housing means there is no need to provide more open space, according to officers.

Councillor Roger Hindle said: “This is the second development in the housing market renewal area and it’s been a long time coming.”
