Details:

"The Ballarat Goldrush - the Gold Nugget" an illustrated talk given by Carol Talbot, author of 'The Amazing Mary Higgs' and 'Working-Class Suffragette:

The Life of Annie Kenney' During the 1850s, John Lees left Oldham to sail to the Gold Fields of Victoria. In Melbourne he teamed up with two cousins from his home town and another man from the south. Together they travelled to Ballarat to seek their fortunes.

A small settlement had sprung up there to cater for the gold seekers’ needs. There were many ways to spend money and many who would steal any gold found. John Lees and his partners struck lucky, finding the largest nugget ever found at that time. They brought the nugget back to England and sold it. With his share of the proceeds John was able to have a row of houses built in Glodwick, Oldham, which was named Nugget Street.
