Details:
"Most of northern England remains rural to this day, and its farms played a vital role in feeding the ever-growing industrial workforce. However, its farmworkers are largely ignored by historians despite leading very different lives from those of their southern equivalents. In particular, the widespread annual hiring fairs were the highlight of the year, and show us a very unexpected picture of regional life. This talk brings it all to life, and includes a recording describing fairs from a century ago." An illustrated talk given by Stephen Caunce
