ATHLETIC are hoping to land a deal to sign Gyamfi Kyeremeh.

The Belgian winger (22) has impressed manager John Sheridan while on trial at the club and shone in pre-season friendlies against Girona and a Manchester United XI.

The former Waasland-Beveren player had been in Germany's fourth division with Eintracht Braunschweig's second team but should now get his chance to impress in Sky Bet League One, as Athletic aim to get back on track following the opening-day loss to Oxford.

However, while Kyeremeh is seen as an option for the left-hand side of midfield, fellow trialist on the other flank Cameron Stewart will not be signing for the club.

"We are trying to sort a deal out with Gyamfi," manager John Sheridan confirmed.

"I like him and he's a good little player.

"Hopefully, if we can sort a deal out then there will be something happening there.

"I feel as though I am alright on the right-hand side. I have to look at what we can bring in and afford.

"Gyamfi has done alright. It is just about getting match-time and getting his fitness up."

Ben Wilson made his Athletic debut in the 2-0 home defeat, the goalkeeper having signed on loan until January from Cardiff.

Wilson, who played eight times on loan for Rochdale last season and who played in the first half against United last week while on trial, has taken the number 12 shirt.

It leaves Sheridan still seeking to add another goalkeeper, in time for the home game against Burton on Wednesday night in the first round of the Carabao Cup (7.45pm kick-off).

Sunderland's Max Stryjek remains a loan option and there is a suggestion that Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who went with the squad to Bath while on trial before being released back to Elland Road, could make a return.

Sheridan also stressed that central midfield is a position he "desperately" wants to strengthen in during the current transfer window.

ETHIC

"The work ethic is spot on, but it's having that cleverness and that player in there who is going to see things and tell people to do little things on the pitch," said Sheridan, who has been linked with a loan move for experience Preston midfield man John Welsh.

"I have made that clear already that is something we are missing and something we have got to try and sort out to get that type of player in, if I can get him."
