ATHLETIC 0, PORT VALE 0 (Port Vale win penalty shoot-out 4-2)
JACK Byrne made his debut for Athletic in a tame Checkatrade Trophy group stalemate.
The on-loan Wigan midfielder was one of the more impressive players on show in a contest in which neither goalkeeper was really put to the test and his curling shot from just outside the penalty area flashed narrowly wide on 80 minutes.
Mason Fawns also pulled wide of goal when well-placed for the hosts in the second half, whole at the other end former Athletic winger Cristian Montano cleared the crossbar with a first-time attempt when he might have done better.
In the post-game penalty shoot-out that followed, worth an extra point in the group, Vale won 4-2 with Ollie Banks and Mason Fawns seeing their penalties saved.
