Oldham’s iconic Yelloway celebrates 100 years on the road

CHADDERTON-based Yelloway Coaches is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The company began when Robert Holt decided to borrow a charabanc from his friend to take a party of excited holidaymakers from Rochdale to Torquay — including special passenger Grace Stansfield, who was to become the superstar of her time, Gracie Fields.

In 1915 Mr Holt started trading as Holt Bros (Rochdale) Ltd which later became Yelloway Motor Services Ltd. Yelloway grew to absorb other transport businesses and throughout its 100-year existence the company has been a popular choice of travel with Oldhamers.

Yelloway is now under the leadership of managing director Mark Brook, whose parents established Courtesy Coaches in 1972, and in 2008 bought the rights to the Yelloway name.
