Championship One-form team Oldham recorded their fourth win in a row at Oxford - their eighth win in 10 outings.

“It was an ugly win, yet a job well done nevertheless,” said coach Scott Naylor.

He believes that his young, fit, talented squad can turn what once looked a foregone conclusion into a thrilling two-horse race for the Championship that will go down to the wire.

He added: “So long as we keep winning, we’ll put North Wales under pressure. We’re on the run-in now and wins are what matter more than anything.

“You can’t always score fancy tries and play loads of open rugby. It’s good if and when you can, but sometimes you have to win ugly, as we did here.

“The pleasing thing was our terrific work in defence. To restrict Oxford to a second-minute try by Lucas Onyango, and to keep our line intact for the next 78 minutes in that extreme heat, took some doing.

“To deny them a bonus point was reward for all our hard work. We’re together as a unit, we have a great team spirit and we are willing to work and tackle for each other, qualities that show through in every game.

“We still have lots of things to work on. But I was also delighted at the way the boys

handled themselves in a tough, rough, physical contest.”
