Passing of a ‘real rugby man’

LYN Morgan, former Oldham Rugby League forward and Oldham Rugby Union Club coach and club official, has died after a long illness, aged 74.

He and his wife lived in Moorside and he only recently returned home after almost three months in hospital.

A proud Welshman, Lyn came north from his native Swansea to turn professional with Oldham as a young prop-forward in the 1964-65 season. He also played for Rochdale Hornets.

When his playing days were over he returned to rugby union, first as coach of Oldham RU Club and then in a similar role at Broughton Park RUFC.

A Broughton Park spokesman said: “Until his recent illness, Lyn was ever-present at Broughton Park matches. He was club president twice — an indication of the esteem in which he was held . He was a real rugby man.”

Until he was taken ill, Lyn was an active member of the Oldham RL Players’ Association, regularly attending monthly meetings and always supporting the association's events.

The funeral service will be at Oldham Crematorium tomorrow at noon, followed by a rugby send-off at Manor Park, home of Oldham RU Club.
