Daniel’s Wimbledon test
Date published: 23 June 2014
DANIEL Smethurst begins his latest Wimbledon adventure with a tough test against ninth seed John Isner tomorrow morning.
Smethurst (23), from Failsworth, soared up the rankings from 400th to 243rd in the space of five months to land a wild card place.
He previously played at Wimbledon in 2009 in the men’s doubles, but went out at the first qualifying stage.
He will have to be at the top of his game to test big-serving American Isner, who stands at 6ft10in and who famously defeated Nicolas Mahut in the sport’s longest-ever match four years ago, winning 70-68 in the final set at Wimbledon.
