KATY Andrew: little hance of more water polo
KATY Andrew made sure she enjoyed every second of what will possibly be her final international tournament in the pool.
Greenfield splash star Katy (18) was in the Great Britain under-20s team at the World Junior Championships in Volos, Greece. The City of Manchester club regular has played water polo for more than six years.
But following the cut in the sport’s funding following the London 2012 Olympics, Katy has largely been forced to call time on her water polo career. Now she intends to continue her studies and hopes to live and work abroad.
“It’s such a shame the funding was cut the way it was,” said Katy. “I’ve played all over the world, but after featuring in the world championships, there’s nothing left.
The team brought the curtain down on their championships campaign with a battling 22-7 defeat to European giants the Netherlands.
Katy added: “Being in Greece and playing such top-class opposition was a brilliant experience and one I’ll never forget.
“There were lots of top players there and it was the best experience of my life. I was determined to take as much out of the trip as possible.”
