Rangers revel in world record effort

RUGBY:
Saddleworth Rangers secretary Peter Townsend was “tired but euphoric” after his club’s unofficial world record attempt at the longest game of touch rugby.
Rangers stopped the clock at 30 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds at the Shaw Hall Bank Road ground, to beat the Waterloo RU club’s time, set in 2012.
Half the pitch saw a group of 28 volunteers keep a game of touch rugby going, and the other featured a continuous game by the club’s juniors and former stars.
“They were running on adrenaline by the end, but it was terrific effort,” said Townsend. “I’m sure there’ll be a lot of sore bodies this week. The players did two hour shifts and then rested in the gym and tried to sleep.
“The children did really well. They were still messing about on the pitch after it had finished.”
All the money raised will go towards a new clubhouse.
