Schofield, Billington bag seniors open
Date published: 16 October 2015
PETER SCHOFIELD and John Billington racked up 43 Stableford points to win Oldham’s new-look seniors’ open.
Runners-up were Mike Moore and Mike Dunkerley on 42, followed by Gordon Lamb and Paul Hopkinson.
Schofield’s tee shot was nearest the pin on the fifth hole, while Stuart Wagstaffe was closest after two shots on the 18th.
For the first time, the competition was held on the flat holes of the course — numbers one to eight, and 18. It was a huge success, with a full turnout and waiting list.
Feedback from the competitors has prompted organisers to use the same format for the next seniors’ open in May or June.
OLDHAM GEMS played the final qualifier for the coveted Brian Radcliffe Trophy and the winner with 18 points was Peter Schofield after a card play-off with Dave Price and Peter Bennion.
The subsidiary team competition saw Price, Bennion and Geoff Beard come out on top with 51 points.
The winner of the trophy will be announced at the GEMS annual dinner in December.
