FOOTBALL: HEYSIDE marked their first final appearance in the Huddersfield League’s premier knock-out competition by lifting the prestigious Barlow Cup .
Played at Huddersfield Town’s John Smiths stadium, the 2-0 victory against Hepworth United was watched by more than 100 Heyside fans.
Heyside forced a couple of early corners and took the lead in the 12th minute. Daniel Dunn flighted over a corner and defender Josh Briddon powerfully headed home from 10 yards.
Heyside continued to create the better chances and top scorer Mark Hopwood went close.
Chris Ollerton and Johnny Pauley drove Heyside forward in search of a second, and Hopwood, James Leonard and Dunn were causing the Hepworth defence problems with their pace.
Heyside extended their lead after 40 minutes when a trademark Hopwood jinking run saw the diminutive striker take on two defenders before rifling an unstoppable 25-yard strike into the roof of the net. Though Hepworth made attacking changes at the break, the defensive line never really looked threatened.
Delighted boss Geoff Howard said: “I’m proud to have been associated with that performance.
“Heyside are a big club in the area and deserve to be successful.”
