Oldham residents encouraged to start jogging with 'with Couch to 5K'

Date published: 26 September 2017

Jogging or running is good and healthy exercise, and local residents are being encouraged to join in what is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to get fit. It can be done almost anywhere, at any time and with barely any equipment - just comfortable clothes, a good pair of trainers and water to keep you hydrated.

The NHS Couch to 5K plan is designed to get you off the couch and gradually work you up to running 5K or for half an hour, in just nine weeks.

Couch to 5K works because it starts with a mix of running and walking, to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. Week one involves running for just a minute at a time, creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable right from the start.

You can run alone, with a friend or join a running club. You do not need to enter a race to enjoy jogging, it is a chance to listen to some music and enjoy some 'me' time. It does not matter how fast or slow you are, just grab your trainers, find a pace that works for you and you will soon see your fitness levels improve.

Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet. It can also be a great stress reliever and has been shown to combat depression.
