Residents encouraged to recycle bathroom items

Residents are being encouraged to recycle bathroom items like empty deodorants and perfume bottles during Recycle Week (Monday 25 September to Sunday 1 October).

Residents are being asked to rethink their bathroom routines by highlighting the benefits of recycling things like empty deodorants and perfume bottles. These items can be recycled again and again without any loss in quality, so they can come back in items such as mobile phones, washing machines or even as another aerosol can.

If everyone in the borough recycled one more deodorant can, it would save enough energy to power a typical primary school for 79 days.

Research from Recycle Now found that over half (51%) of Greater Manchester’s population do not always recycle their aerosols, including deodorant and hairspray cans from the bedroom or bathroom. By getting residents to add recycling to their bathroom routine, and recycling just a few more items from around the house can make a real difference.

Bathroom recycling tips:

• Where possible empty and rinse plastic bottles and glass bottles and jars before they go in the green and blue mixed recycling bin.
• Remove lids and caps from air fresheners, deodorants and shaving foam aerosols where easy to do so.
• Mirrors and nail varnish bottles are not recyclable and should be put in your general waste bin.
