Black history month at Failsworth Library

Date published: 03 October 2017

Failsworth Library is hosting a series of events celebrating Oldham’s ‘New Communities’ as part of October’s Black History Month.

Oldham has a long history of people coming to live in the area. The industrial revolution from the end of the 18th century and the development of the cotton spinning industry in Oldham during the 19th century witnessed a huge influx of people into the town to satisfy the needs of the mills.

The development of transport links such as roads, canals, railways, ships, and planes enabled people to come from further and further afield.

Councillor Barbara Brownridge, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Co-operatives, said: "Oldham is a vibrant and diverse place where a sense of being part of our community is important.

"It is the arrival of these new communities many years ago that has made Oldham the place it is today. I believe together we are stronger."

All events are free and take place at Failsworth Library, Oldham Road, Failsworth, M35 0FJ.
