Oldham Mosque is giving gifts to the homeless
The Nusrat ul Islam Mosque and Education Centre are collecting gifts for the homeless to be distributed by their school students around Oldham and Manchester city centre on New Year’s Day.
Last year, the collection helped an estimated 70 to 80 people in Oldham, providing hot food, hot drinks, snacks and essential Winter wear such as hats, scarves and gloves.
The community connected to the Mosque have been instructed to give new items of clothing or to give money to the founding members, who will then go out and purchase needed items.
Mohammed Tufail OBE, a founding member of the Oldham Mosque Council Organisation said: “We are not looking for hand me downs. We want to be giving genuine, good quality clothes to those who are suffering.”
“This is all run by the young people. We want the school children to understand the importance of sharing, giving and looking after the people who are less well off.
“Even though this [teaching them to help others] is part of their curriculum, it’s not enough just to teach them about the less fortunate, we want them to experience these things for themselves.
“We are providing preparation for the real world and for a real life as citizens of Oldham and of the UK.’’
