Date published: 15 January 2018

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust will be hosting a free ‘talk and tour’ of the Maggie’s Centre at The Royal Oldham Hospital on Wednesday 31 January (2.00 pm – 4.00 pm).

The event will be an opportunity for staff, public and our Trust members to speak with staff and centre users and to learn more about what Maggie’s Oldham has to offer.

Maggie’s Oldham has been built in the grounds of The Royal Oldham Hospital, the Centre was developed by Maggie’s working in partnership with The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to enhance the cancer care and support already on offer.

Maggie’s Oldham offers a way of living well with cancer and making sure that people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, are really listened to, that they are offered tailored individual support, group support and practical advice, all delivered by qualified professionals within a space that enables them to meet other people who are living with cancer.

The Centre offers psychological support, benefits advice, nutrition workshops, relaxation and stress management, art therapy and yoga.

Bernie Byrne, Centre Head at Maggie’s Oldham said:  “The talk and tour will explore the relationship between architecture and well being and our unique approach to cancer support at Maggie’s. There has been significant research over recent years about architectures profound impact and effect on wellbeing; this is something that we see the benefit of every day for the people affected by cancer who visit our Centre.

Since we opened in June 2017, we have had 3200 visits to the centre since and thirty percent of those visits were made by men !!. We have been running relaxation classes, art and music workshops, stress management courses, post-treatment courses, yoga, gentle exercise classes as well as welcoming people into the drop-in for a cup of tea and a chat.

We look forward to welcoming you to Maggie’s and sharing some more about our unique approach to cancer support.”

The talk and tour will be held on Wednesday 31st January, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm at the Maggie’s Centre, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Road, Oldham.

The event is free and is one of a series of ‘Medicine for Members’ events arranged to give the public and the Trust’s public members a greater insight into their local hospital and the services it provides. So far, more than 12,500 people have signed up to become Trust members.
