The scene at Tesco Express on Ashton Road this morning
An investigation has been launched after reports of a man dying at a Tesco Express in Oldham late last night (Sunday, May 20).
It was around 10.20pm when police received a report of staff being threatened at the store on Ashton Road.
Officers arrived soon afterwards and further emergency services were requested.
A short while later a man, believed to be in his 30s, died at the scene.
Greater Manchester Police have now referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct via their Professional Standards Branch, something which is understood to be routine at such incidents.
A statement from Tesco say they are aware of the incident and have decided to close the store while enquiries continue to be made.
Witnesses reported seeing a man on the roof of the supermarket, while others claim someone smashed the door to the shop. However, neither report has yet been confirmed by Police.
