Arrests made following 'nasty' attack in Stamford Park

Date published: 16 July 2018

Officers investigating the assault of a girl in Stamford Park in Ashton have made arrests.

After being made aware of a video circulating on social media that shows a teenager being assaulted, officers from GMP’s Tameside Borough launched an investigation and established it happened near to the boating lake on Friday (July 13).

The 13-year-old girl who can be seen being attacked in the video went to hospital yesterday with extensive bruising but has since been discharged to recover at home.

Four teenage girls have been arrested on suspicion of assault and have been released under investigation.

While enquiries continue, Tameside’s chief officer’s urge people to stop sharing the video online.

Chief Inspector Andy Harty of GMP’s Tameside Borough, said: “This investigation surrounds a particularly nasty attack that happened in broad daylight, leaving a teenager with no option to defend herself so I’m sure we can all agree we want to get justice for her and her family.

“I cannot urge the importance of people refraining from sharing the video online and speculating about the identity of those in the video - it can be extremely unhelpful and could undermine the investigation.

“In the meantime, I want to thank the public for their patience as we continue with our enquiries into this awful attack and assure them we will provide updates when we can.”

Anyone who witnessed the assault or has any information that would help, should contact police on 0161 856 9202 quoting reference number 1850 of 14/07/18 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
