Oldham's plans for National Fitness Day

Date published: 19 September 2018

Oldham Community Leisure has announced plans to take part in National Fitness Day, the UK’s largest physical activity celebration, spearheaded by ukactive.

National Fitness Day encourages the nation to celebrate the fun of fitness and physical activity, and will take place on Wednesday 26 September.

To help locals experience how much fun getting active can be, Oldham Community Leisure will be offering gym, swim and studio sessions across all of its centres for just £1, all day.

For anyone interested in taking up an Oldham Active membership, the joining fee will – for one day only – be just £1.

Numerous activities will be on offer including Challenge Oldham!, where locals will compete to see how far they can row as a group in one day across all of Oldham Community Leisure's Active Centres.

The sports hall at Oldham Leisure Centre will play host to a Health & Wellbeing Market, where customers can try out everything from a group line dance and chair-based exercise sessions to Oldham College’s amazing ‘smoothie bikes’.

A unique blend of health, wellbeing and fitness experts will be on hand, so visitors can ask advice, get all of their questions answered and find out more about what’s going on in Oldham.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet with useful wellbeing charities including Mind, Macmillan and Age UK.

Chadderton Wellbeing Centre will host Lifeguard Awareness Training for college/sixth form students from 9am-12pm, while Saddleworth Pool and Leisure Centre will offer up a Teen Gym Circuit Class, suitable for 13-15 years olds, from 4pm-4.45pm.

Pete Howson, Head of Customer Relations at OCL, says: “National Fitness Day is our chance to highlight the role physical activity plays across Oldham and to raise awareness of its importance in helping us all to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.

"Research shows that if you exercise with others, you’re more likely to stick with it; the social atmosphere creates a positive environment and helps us to enjoy being active.

"So, grab a friend, family member, colleague, or team and join OCL on the most active day of the year!”

National Fitness Day will kick off with a mass dance workout in the heart of London, led by Dame Darcey Bussell.

The ballerina and Strictly Come Dancing judge will conduct an outdoor dance fitness class in the City of London Corporation’s Guildhall Courtyard.

Throughout the UK, ukactive will be highlighting that keeping physically active means something different to us all by asking people to share what fitness means to them via social media.

Photos and videos can be shared using #Fitness2Me. ukactive will then select the most inspiring #Fitness2Me heroes from the nine English regions and the three nations that make up the UK, and promote their stories to a national audience.
