Foodbank “overwhelmed” by response after cruel break-in

Date published: 10 January 2019

Volunteers at Oldham Foodbank have been overwhelmed by the response from people far and wide following the cruel break-in at the weekend.

During the sickening incident a number of items were taken including tablet computers, a tower PC, hard drive, food and around £200 in cash.

Foodbank volunteers subsequently set up a crowdfunding page in a bid to try and get the money back and help pay for the equipment which was stolen during the burglary, and the initial fund-raising target has already been well and truly smashed.

More than 200 donations have so far been received, with cash raised totalling almost £7,000.

Lisa is the manager at the charity.

She says they’ve had donations from all over the world.

Lisa said: “We had an American lady phone this morning, she wants to donate, we had a lady from Switzerland.

"It makes you feel good, something as bad as this is there’s a lot of good people that’ve come in and supported us in everything that we’re doing.”

Police say they believe the Foodbank break-in happened between midday on Saturday (January 5) and 9.50am on Monday (January 7) when the volunteers returned to the building.

Oldham Foodbank took to social media to bid for locals to help them recover from the break-in and they’ve done the same to thank those who’ve come forward to help and vowed to continue helping people.

They’ve promised the money raised will be used to get the foodbank back up and running.

Lisa added: “We’re going to be able to get the new computer, we can go and get the tablets that we need so we can start doing the fuel bank vouchers and we can just upgrade everything.

"Whatever is left over will be then kept and used for the good of the foodbank.”
