Superman and his super-woman Mum to walk in memory of wonderful Dad and husband

An Oldham 5-year-old is limbering up to walk in the memory of his Dad for the 6th time.

Davey Lane became the youngest walker at just 6 weeks old in 2013 when he took on the Hospice to Hospice walk with his Mum Lisa.

He's now back to take on the 7.25 mile route to raise money for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, where his Dad Dave died.

Dave Lane was diagnosed with a grade 4 brain tumour, glioblastoma, which returned in 2012 – he found out on Father’s Day the same year that his wife Lisa was pregnant with Davey.

Lisa Lane and Dave were both from Middleton, and the pair met back in 2006 and got married at St Leonard’s Church in August 2011.

Dave, who was 43, passed away on 1st December after spending just four days at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, Lisa recalls: “My husband was able to die in peace and with dignity with his family and friends around - he had 44 visitors over the time he was at the Hospice.

“Having the doctors and nurses there to help make difficult decisions was a Godsend for me – I finally felt able to be his wife rather than his carer.”

A touching tribute to his late father, Davey was born, on 1st March, also known as St David’s Day.

Lisa and Superman Davey

Last year saw the first time Davey actually walked walked (and scootered) around the course dressed in the famous group attire, Superman.

Lisa said: “Dave was my superman, I was his Lisa Lane! We always wear our Superman shirts to the walk, it’s a lovely tradition. We’ve got teddy bears made up of Dave’s old clothes, much of which are Superman themed!”

Six years on, Lisa said: “It gets easier, you don’t ever get over, your world gets bigger and you learn to fill that void left behind.”

“We keep Dave’s memory alive in everything we do, from talking about his favourite food to taking part in the Hospice to Hospice walk.”

A group of around 16 are set to take on the 13th annual Hospice to Hospice Walk with Lisa and Davey, this year starting from Heyside Cricket Club due to work commencing on the £2.1m new build.

In 2018, the Hospice to Hospice walk with Springhill had over 500 walkers, and this year sees the addition of a special registration form…for dogs! Your four-legged friend will receive a drawstring bag, canine water bottle and poop bag dispenser with bags. Doggie bandanas will also be on sale.

Pre-registration costs £7 per person and £5 for dogs, register on the day between 9:15 and 10:15am for £10.
