The number of new cases of Coronavirus in Oldham has fallen by a third in the 7-days leading up to the 15th August, however the town remains in the ‘Red’ zone.

That’s according to the latest figures from Oldham Council, Public Health England and the Office for National Statistics, who have all confirmed the town still has the highest rate of infections across the whole of Greater Manchester.

Oldham also continues to be significantly above the rate of new infections in England.

It’s less than a week since the town manage to avoid being placed into a Leicester-style local lockdown however new restrictions were introduced with these figures appearing to show the town is going in the right direction.

The Government are expected to announce the lifting of restrictions for certain areas of Greater Manchester, with Bolton and Wigan being rumoured to be among those to see them lifted, however the Oldham Evening Chronicle understand Oldham won’t be one of those areas.

According to the official figures Oldham saw 135 confirmed new cases of Covid-19 in the week leading up to 15th August, a rate of 56.9 per 100,000 people.

That number has fallen from 85.2 per 100,000 people the previous week.

Across Greater Manchester the number of new cases is 820 up to 15th August, a rate of 28.8 while in England 6,123 new people were confirmed to have the virus, 10.9 per 100,000 people.
