Storm Christoph continues to lash Oldham

Date published: 20 January 2021

Storm Christoph continues to cause headaches for many Oldhamers as heavy bursts of rain continue to be a worrying feature across the Borough.

An amber weather warning issued for heavy rain will remain in place until Thursday at midday.

Thankfully many Oldhamers appeared to escaped the worst of Storm Christoph yesterday as morning downpours eased later, but there was still 27mm of rain registered in Diggle yesterday, and 17mm today already.

Leaking roofs and ceilings are causing problems in Chadderton.

The heavy rain will continue, coming in pulses from the south west, but changes are due to be arriving later.

It will remain mild, but into the evening it will turn colder.

The maximum temperature today will be 10°C - mild for the time of year.

This evening, the wind will turn more north-westerly and the rain will turn sleety on its back edge, with some snow expected for a time.

It will turn much colder with wintry showers during the night, including sleet, hail and hill-snow.

Wind gusts of 30mph can also be expected.

Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident yesterday evening (Tuesday) due to the storm, with heavy rain expected to batter the region today.

A number of flood alerts and warnings remain in place over the next 24 hours for some areas surrounding the River Mersey, River Irwell and River Bollin in Greater Manchester.

A flood warning is in force for the River Roch in Rochdale - ‘immediate action’ is now required for affected properties, while the River Tame in Stalybridge is looking very high after continuing prolonged heavy rainfall.
