Oldham's Covid death rate is much higher than the national average
It's been revealed that Oldham has one of the UK's highest Covid-19 death rates, after figures show the national death toll his risen to over 100,000.
The death rate for the UK now stands at 150 per 100,000 people. In Oldham, that figure is 216. 44% higher than the national average.
Since the beginning of the pandemic in the borough, 513 deaths have been reported within 28 days of a positive Covid test.
Oldham was hit particularly hard by the first wave of the pandemic in April and May, with 67 deaths reported in one week in April
Since then, the infection rate in the town has declined, with the borough consistenly reporting one of the lowest rates in Greater Manchester.
Oldham comes 19th in a table showing death rates in 192 areas of the UK. Havering in East London has the highest rate, at 274. Na h-Eileanan Siar in the Outer Hebrides has the lowest, at just 3.7.
Covid vaccines continue to be rolled-out across the country, with a total of 6,853,327 now having received a first dose.
Last week, it was confirmed that more than 13,000 vaccines have been delivered to the borough's most elderly and vulnerable residents, as well as to front-line workers.
Oldham Council said this morning that whilst the vast majority of Oldhamers are continuing to follow the Coronavirus rules, there are still reports of people breaching the regulations and acting irresponsibly, which potentially puts lives at risk.
Councillor Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council said: “This is a difficult time for everyone, particularly as family and friends can’t spend time together.
“But the restrictions are in place to protect us all and must be followed at all times. Thankfully most Oldhamers are doing the right thing.
“Everyone can do their bit to help and one of the biggest things is do not travel unless you have to and to stay local.
“Don’t get in your car and drive, instead go to one of the parks or green spaces near you – don’t go past a green space to get to a green space.
“If you do go anywhere park responsibly, if you don’t then you risk a fine. Think of the residents who live there.
“Wherever you go please remember Hands, Face, Space and let’s protect ourselves, our families and the NHS.”
