A welcome return for students at The Hathershaw College

Date published: 10 March 2021

Staff at The Hathershaw College were thrilled to start welcoming students back into the building this week.

Whilst a number of pupils have continued to attend since January, such as those whose parents are Key workers, the vast majority of students have been learning online.

Putting plans in place for the lateral flow tests was testing in itself, but the organisation by those staff involved has meant the college had a smooth start.

The vast majority of Year 11 students got tested for COVID on Monday.

Other year groups are being tested as they return throughout this week.

The students themselves have been equally pleased to return and are reported to have approached the new testing regime, with real maturity.

Mark Giles, Principal at the college said “As a result of a real team effort, students return from today to our classrooms which is the best place for them to learn.

“To test well over 1000 students three times each over the next fortnight is a huge logistical exercise, but it will help to keep them, their families and our staff safe as well as lead the way for them moving to the sustainable home testing option.

“The highlight of today has been seeing students back in classrooms making progress with their peers and teachers.

“Let’s hope this is the final enforced closure of schools as young people have been affected massively by the disruption.”
