Traffic jams are blamed for higher CO2 emissions
Oldham ranks 16th in the North West, and 102nd out of 159 in England's overall rankings for traffic CO2 emissions. Oldham's traffic CO2 emissions are 48% higher than England's average.
New figures have been released today which show the amount of CO2 being emitted by drivers, just through standing in traffic jams.
England's average traffic delays over a lifetime are 7,247 hours, which accounts for 10,304 kg of CO2 emissions
The most polluting region is London with average lifetime delays of 18,166 hours per vehicle, averaging 26,246 kg each - that's 2.5 times more than England's average emissions
The least polluting region is the East of England with average lifetime delays of 5,056 hours, averaging 7,305 kg of CO2 per vehicle - on average, the East produces 29% lower emissions than England's average
The second most polluting region in England is the North West.
On average, each vehicle is subject to 8,251hours of delay over a lifetime, leading to an average of 11,921kg of CO2 emissions per vehicle –16% above England’s average of 10,304 kg.
That’s the equivalent of 1,831 homes’ electricity use for one year.
