GM Mayor Burnham signs up for Oldham MP’s summer school

Date published: 23 June 2021

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, has signed up to speak to students at Debbie Abrahams MP’s eighth annual summer school for young people.

The MP’s Working for your Community Summer School, which is free and aimed at 18-24-year-olds and running from July 12-16, 2021, is still accepting applications up until midnight on Sunday (June 27).

Reacting to the news that Mr Burnham will take part, summer school host Ms Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, said: “Andy is one of the UK’s highest profile politicians so it’s great that he’s making time to meet the young participants at a time when he’s so busy co-ordinating Greater Manchester’s Covid response.”

She added: “The aim of the summer school is to help participants understand what politics is about which, in my opinion, is all about helping your community!

“As such the week involves hearing from leading politicians like Andy, and being free to ask them questions about their motivation to get into politics, and then building their own skills to develop local community projects across Oldham and Saddleworth.

“The key skills they’ll learn about will stand them in good stead for both future involvement community based work and politics.”

Last year, sessions were delivered by various experts and leaders in community development, campaigning, communications, sport and politics including: Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House; Annaliese Dodds MP, Shadow Chancellor; Kevin Sinfield MBE, Leeds Rhinos Director of Rugby; John Abrahams, England Lions Cricket selector; Lisa Nandy MP, Shadow Foreign Secretary; Dame Eleanor Laing, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons; David Lammy MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor; Mr Burnham; and Angela Rayner MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

It’s easy to sign up, just register your interest in the summer school by emailing a letter of application with a curriculum vitae by email to: abrahamsd@parliament.uk

The closing date for receipt of applications is midnight on Sunday.
