Olympic ace Shauna visits Oldham’s new climbing centre ahead of opening

Date published: 08 September 2021

Team GB Olympic climber Shauna Coxsey visited the exciting new Summit Up centre in Oldham today (Wednesday) to run the rule over its world class climbing walls before they open to the public on Saturday week, September 18.

Summit Up is a new 20,000 sq ft climbing centre situated adjacent to the Mahdlo Youth Zone in the town centre.

It features a wide variety of state-of-the-art climbing walls, angles and holds.

Climbers can explore 100 climbing routes spread across 47 rope lines, two official speed walls with timers and a unique bouldering area with a floating boulder and two-tier section, all of which are of equal standard to those used in the Tokyo Olympics.

For those looking to climb without a partner, the centre has auto belays for solo climbing.

It’s also home to one of the largest and highest Clip ‘n Climb arenas in the UK, with 25 different fun challenges for ages 4+, plus toddler sessions for kids aged 2-4 and children’s parties.

Key challenges at Clip ‘n Climb include the popular Stairway to Heaven, the adrenalin pumping Leap of Faith, and an impressive 10 metre Vertical Drop Slide.

There will also be two ValoClimb walls that use the world’s first interactive gaming technology – combining climbing with interactive gaming.

Overlooking the Clip ‘n Climb arena sits an alpine themed café called South Ridge Café, offering a selection of food and drinks, with a great view of the centre.

Summit Up is a community-focused project initiated by The Stoller Charitable Trust, a charity whose purpose has been to provide opportunities to raise aspirations, support Oldham’s young people to reach the height of their ability and to provide a helping hand when it is most needed.

The purpose-built climbing centre aims to provide a fun and safe space for the whole family to experience something new and push their limits in an exciting new leisure facility.

All distributable profits will go directly back into supporting charity.

Climbing champion Shauna said of the new centre: "It is fantastic to see more people discovering climbing after the Olympic Games and a venue like Summit Up is a fantastic place to get into this amazing sport.

"With all three disciplines of climbing on offer as well as the Clip n Climb challenges, Oldham is very lucky to have a venue like this on its doorstep."

The public can pre-book their climbing slots online ahead of the centre’s official opening on Saturday week.
