Every little really does help

Shoppers at Tesco in Greenfield have bought into the idea of the store’s slogan every little does really help when they select a book gifted by kind-hearted visitors.

Because since it’s launch, books have filled a special shelf in the store and they have already raised hundreds of pounds for local good causes and charities, driven by the store’s community champion, Gregg Barratt.

Among the latest local groups to receive payouts from the scheme are:

Peter Killan, UCAN (£100), Saddleworth Village Olympics (£500), and Street Scene (£100).

They received the funds from store manager Tom Shafi.

Gregg explained: “The book shelf is run by customers who bring books to the customer service desk and then I put them on the windowsill.

“A former store manager came up with the idea six years ago.

"This enables Tesco customers to donate to groups locally.

“We have customers that come in store, donate £5 for a book, take it home, read it and then return the book with some of their own books as well.

“It's really successful and because of covid we had to take it off.

"But now as restrictions are lifting customers are so glad its back.”
