100-mile Ramadan walk around Oldham raises over £2000 for charities

A group who walked one-hundred miles around Oldham whilst they were fasting for Ramadan has made a lasting contribution to three charities.

The team of Muslim volunteers followed Islamic teaching and dedicated their efforts to charity during the Holy month of Ramadan.

The £2,200 raised was distributed between Dr Kershaw's Hospice, Kingfisher Special School, and a clean-water project in Bangladesh, ILB Tubewell

Organiser Amin Babor Chowdhury - who is also head of the British Education Awards - says the donation to Kingfisher School was particularly rewarding.

"When we were planning our walk, we thought carefully about helping our Oldham community as well as a clean water project in Bangladesh.  We donated some money to Dr Kershaw’s which has helped so many of our community; and we all know how difficult things have been for children during lockdown and wanted to support Kingfisher School in their fantastic endeavours too."

Ramadan is a popular time for believers to contribute a proportion of their wealth in the shape of Zakat. One of the five pillars of the faith, it commands those who meet the necessary criteria of wealth to give to the needy.
 
Amin feels that one of the key benefits of his campaign was to promote an understanding of Islam as well as remind Muslims that they have a duty to their community.

"Oldham is our home, and we strive to make sure that everyone is valued, whether they be gaining an education or facing a difficult or terminal illness. I think by walking one hundred miles we may also have inspired a few people to exercise!"

Kingfisher Special School is the only Primary School in Oldham for children with complex and severe learning needs. In September the school opened a new 'Ducklings Nursery' for 2 year old children who need specialist provision.
