Oldham is one of the most sleep deprived areas of Greater Manchester and the UK.

A new study has ranked Oldham sixth, in a poll of Brits living in the most sleep deprived areas of the UK.

The recently updated study by Miracle Leaf, has revealed that the postcode OL2, is one of the most sleep-deprived places in Greater Manchester, in second place.

Withington in Greater Manchester, was ranked third.  Leeds came top.

By using data extracted from Google Keyword Planner,  they found how many times the search term “why can’t I sleep” had been asked in places within the UK.

In addition to this, they also correlated the monthly average for each place, as well as using the most up-to-date Office for National Statistics data to find out population numbers for each place, which was used to allocate the total percentage of residents searching this term.

Insomnia is a problematic subject for a large chunk of the public in the UK, with Formulate Health finding that over 36% of UK adults struggle to sleep at least on a weekly basis.

On top of that, nearly half of the UK find it difficult to fall asleep at least once a month.

                                                Stress and screen time factors

The reason that this study should be relevant in the coming months of 2021 is that stress is a direct correlation to insomnia as recent studies have further proved. With the potential scare of the new variant Omicron in the UK and with the lead up to Christmas and New Year, stress levels across the nation are at an all-time high in response to the uncertainty that COVID-19 will pose across the UK.

Miracle Leaf have expressed their own advice regarding insomnia problems, across the UK.

“In times like these, it is completely understandable for people to feel stressful.

"The constant anxiety that COVID-19 has given to the public will always one of the most stressful parts of everyone’s lives.

"Given that stress is potentially going to ramp up in the new year, there is no doubt that insomnia will, unfortunately, be felt across the nation.

"The best sleeping advice that we can give as sleeping experts is to manage your screen time wisely.

"With almost everyone in the world owning smartphones, tablets, televisions and even computer screens, we can often miss the effects that screens can have on our well-being, with easy access to news stories and other content online, stress can sneak up on us without us even realizing it."
