Work on new affordable apartments that are designed to be eco-friendly and ‘fit for the future’ will begin this month.

Housing association First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) is delivering a £1 million scheme on a brownfield site off Burnley Lane in Chadderton.

It will be made up of nine one-bedroom flats which will be for affordable rent, and are aimed to meet local housing need.

Planning permission was granted in November for the three storey building, which will replace a single detached house which First Choice says has stood derelict for a number of years.

The new homes are due to be completed in December once work begins on site later in January.

First Choice says that the properties will be low carbon and economical for households to run.

Plans for the flats are a step closer

They will have an Energy Performance Certificate B, heating and hot water will be generated by electricity and each home will have cycle storage, to encourage use of sustainable transport.

Joel Owen, FCHO Director of Development said: “As in many parts of the country, demand for affordable housing in Oldham outstrips supply and we are working hard to improve the situation locally.

“Getting into contract on the Burnley Lane project is great news to start the year with and means we are another step closer to delivering 750 new homes by 2026 in Oldham, Rochdale and surrounding areas of Tameside, Kirklees and Calderdale to help improve the lives of local people.

“Sustainability continues to be a priority for us, and these apartments are designed to be energy efficient and equipped with features to minimise their environmental impact.

“It means our customers can benefit from good quality housing, lower energy bills and more money in their pockets and I look forward to the project progressing.”
