Trees planted in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee

Oldham Council has pledged to dedicate every tree planted in 2022 to the Queen’s Green Canopy Project.

The national tree planting scheme was created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this weekend, which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee."

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, the Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 ancient woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

Here in Oldham, council staff have already planted over 400 individual native trees and 2 hectares of new woodland this year, and will start planting again in October through to December.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Leader of Oldham Council said: “Planting new trees is one of the best ways we can help enrich our planet, and is a fitting and long-lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s seven decades of service.

"Throughout her reign, The Queen has planted more than 1,500 trees all over the world and has spoken alongside Sir David Attenborough of the importance of trees in the future of our planet.

"It's great to see Oldhamers getting involved in the Queen's Green Canopy project, which will make our borough greener for generations to come."

The newly-planted trees are mostly native species selected for their suitability to the site conditions and ability to create new habitats for wildlife.

By inviting everyone to plant new trees throughout the country, the Queen’s Green Canopy seeks to highlight the significant value of trees and woodlands to air quality, climate change, and people's health and wellbeing.

Newly-wooded areas will add to the already extensive tree planting programme taking place here in Oldham.
