Sold-out Dr Kershaw's Golf Day raises raises almost £10,000

Date published: 23 September 2022

Brand new golfing fund-raising event, the Dr Kershaw’s Cup, took place recently, and with 22 four-ball teams on the green at Crompton and Royton Golf Club, the sell-out event exceeded the Hospice’s expectations.

The event raised just under £10,000 which will make a real difference to so many patients and families across the borough.

The day teed off with breakfast and a shotgun start before golfers started their 18 holes, followed by halfway house refreshments, a buffet meal, official prize presentation and a raffle with all proceeds going to the Hospice, and the top prize of a 32” JVC TV up for grabs.

Rebecca Bentham, Event Organiser and Director of Income and Development at the Hospice, said: “We were thrilled with the success of our first ever golf day, and the generosity of those who attended and supported the event.

"The sun shone as 22 teams competed on the beautiful course of Crompton and Royton Golf Club, in the hope of winning the coveted silver trophy.

"The event overall raised just under £10,000 which is just incredible.

"I look forward to this becoming an annual event for the Hospice and watching it grow.”

With over 22 teams competing to be crowned the Dr Kershaw's Cup champions, one lucky team captained by Darren Mayers lifted the coveted trophy at the end, along with being presented with vouchers for each of the four in the team.

The second-placed team captained by Adrian Clegg also received an accolade with vouchers awarded to each player.

Darren, Captain of the winning team, said: “We were over the moon to win, because we never expected it.

"We found the day to be very well run and it felt good to be doing something we all enjoy for a cause we all support.

"We will definitely be taking part next year, because it was such a good day and because we need to defend our trophy!

"I would definitely encourage others to take part in the next Dr Kershaw’s Golf Day.”

Rudi Ryan, another of the players who took part on the day, added: “I would highly recommend the Dr Kershaw’s Cup for golfers at all levels, the day was well organised and fluid, with great raffle prizes.

"I will definitely be signing up again next year!”

Rebecca added: “Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our Golf Day, we are so very grateful.

"Thank you also to our main event sponsor, Roma, and our hole sponsors - Exmant, The Rotary Club of Oldham Metro, Cameron Murry Golf, UK Drone Services, East Midlands Transport and Kitchens by DTN.

"Thank you to Crompton and Royton Golf Club for their support with the day, to Fest Events for their fantastic catering and to each and every person and company who donated raffle prizes which were used on the day to raise vital funds.

"Thanks also to our wonderful volunteers who supported with the event.”
