John Holden, steward of Dobcross Band and Social Club was presented with the Rochdale, Oldham and Bury branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Club of the Year Award and Region Club of the Year for Greater Manchester CAMRA,

Proud Band Club president Terry Lawless paid tribute the dedication and skill of John, stating: “He has been the mainstay of the Club for almost 40 years and has been through many highs and lows in that time.

“It wasn’t too long ago the club only served keg beer, now thanks to John’s undoubted talent as a cellarman, we are able to offer a range of excellent real ales.

“These awards are testament to John’s ability and enthusiasm, and richly deserved.”

Presenting the local award, Peter Alexander, Rochdale, Oldham and Bury Branch Chairman, praised the club for its commitment to real ale and said he was  delighted the club had now been recognised beyond its home branch by independent judges.

In turn, Ralph Warrington, CAMRA’s Regional Director elect, presented the Regional Award saying the club has now progressed to the Super Region and is currently in the last 16 clubs across Britain competing for National Club of the Year title.

Results on the current round will be out in December, when the last four clubs will battle for the top honour.

John Holden thanked both the CAMRA Branch and Region for their recognition and said:“I’m honoured and humbled by these prestigious awards.

“It  means a lot to have this kind of appreciation and of course our achievements are down to a great team of staff and a supportive committee. Hopefully we progress through the next round and have a crack at being the best Club in the whole of Great Britain.”
