Northmoor Academy becomes first ‘Wollstonecraft School’ in the country

Year 5 children from Northmoor Academy in Oldham worked with The Wollstonecraft Society to become the first officially affiliated school.

The children produced an assembly celebrating the life and achievements of this inspirational woman.

They were presented with their certificate by the charity’s founder Bee Rowlatt, who came from London to thank the children personally.

Bee presented the school with their certificate confirming their status as the very first Mary Wollstonecraft school.

The children worked exceptionally hard to produce an assembly exploring the life and achievements of Mary and her search for equality.

The children discovered that despite facing many personal barriers, Mary was still a champion for others.

The assembly culminated in a rousing performance of ‘The Power in Me’ performed by Jet class.

The children chose this song because they believe that Mary had the power in her to speak out for human rights.

The children discussed what types of causes Mary would have supported in modern times and they agreed that Greta Thunberg and the Black Lives Matters campaign would have been important to Mary too.

Bee said: "Northmoor Academy's talented students showed an understanding of Mary Wollstonecraft's human rights message by making it their own.

"I was impressed by their interpretation of her work, and inspired by their confident delivery.

"This is a powerful reminder that role models really do matter.

"I want to congratulate the children and staff of Northmoor Academy for celebrating the ideas of equality; of achieving against the odds and of human rights for all - these are the ideas that Mary Wollstonecraft also stood for."

Antony Hughes, CEO of The Harmony Trust, added: “It has been uplifting to see a new generation of children being inspired by Mary’s historic influence on equality and fairness.

"Our children and our Trust can relate to her story and achievements, and we are so proud of our pupils and the learning they showed in this project.”

Northmoor Academy is part of The Harmony Trust which is a multi-academy and school-led organisation based in Oldham, Tameside and Derby.

The Trust was set up in February 2014 with its core aim being to raise attainment in local schools.
