Oldham man racially abused police officer after being arrested for assaulting a woman

Date published: 18 April 2023

A man from Oldham has been sentenced following an assault on a woman at a Metrolink stop in Rochdale.

He also racially abused a Greater Manchester Police officer while being arrested.

Simon Heyes, of Waverley Street in Oldham, was at Rochdale town centre tram stop on February 9 when he assaulted a woman.

He was later arrested and, during that process, he racially abused a Greater Manchester Police officer.

On February 11 at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court, Heyes pleaded guilty to assault by beating and racially aggravated intentional harassment.

On March 31, he appeared at the same court to be sentenced.

Yesterday (Monday), CPS North West Tweeted: "Simon Heyes, 34, assaulted a woman at Rochdale Metrolink station in September.

"When arrested he racially abused a @gmpolice officer.

"He was given an 18 month community order and has to carry out 80 hrs unpaid work, including an uplift of 20 hours for the racist language."
