Football legend Gazza is coming to Oldham

Date published: 18 April 2023

One of football's most famous and popular-ever players is heading to Oldham this weekend.

St Anne's Rugby Club in Higginshaw is the venue for a very special 'Evening with Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne', which takes place on Saturday (April 22), from 7.30pm.

Gateshead-born Gazza's career included playing for Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, and Glasgow Rangers.

He has also played for the English national football team, most notably when he featured in the squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals in Italy in 1990.

Gazza grew up in the Dunston area of Gateshead and played for the local Redheugh Boys Club.

He signed for Newcastle United in 1983 as an apprentice and made his first team debut in 1985.

In total, he made 99 appearances and scored 25 goals for Newcastle before being bought by Tottenham Hotspur in 1988 for £2million.

Later that year he made his first England appearance when he came on as a substitute in a game against Denmark.

In 1990, he was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year after his heroics in at Italia '90.

An injury in the 1991 FA Cup Final against Nottingham Forest prevented him from playing for more than a year.

As he recovered from injury, he moved to Lazio in Italy for a fee of £5.5million.

Beset by injury and intrusive media interest, he saw little playing success for his club side and returned to the UK in June 1995 to play for Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Premier League.

He later played for Middlesbrough, Everton and Burnley.

In total, football icon Gazza scored a total of 110 goals in 457 appearances for the eight clubs he played for.

At international level, he played 57 times for England and scored 10 goals.

As well as a high profile sport memorabilia auction on the night, celebrity comedian John Gillan will also be appearing on Saturday.

A limited number of tickets, priced at £75 (standard) and £95 (VIP) are still available.

Simply call 07850 394053 to book yours, as a fantastic night is guaranteed.
