Vandals leave 'a trail of mess and destruction' at Northern Roots urban farm

Date published: 22 May 2023

Greater Manchester Police are investigating after the urban farm at the Northern Roots centre in Oldham was 'seriously' vandalised.

The news was announced on social media (@NorthernRootsOL) this morning (Monday), along with images of the damage caused.

A post read: "We are sad to report that over the weekend the Northern Roots Urban Farm has been seriously vandalised.

"Young plants and inactive beehives have been destroyed, holes have been cut through the new polytunnel, and vandals have left a trail of mess and destruction.

"All of Northern Roots activities are funded using charitable grants and donations.

"Northern Roots will now have to redirect time, resources and charitable funds to repairing the damage, rather than carrying out conservation work or creating opportunities for local residents.

"This incident has been reported to the police.

"If you have any information that might be useful to their investigation, please get in touch via DM or via info@northern-roots.uk

"Thank you."

Anyone with information can also make a report via GMP's website: www.gmp.police.uk

Alternatively, call the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Northern Roots, which is continuing to develop the UK’s largest urban farm and eco-park in Oldham, recently received a grant of £191,630 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a year-long heritage and communities project entitled ‘Beautiful Oldham - Why Not?’.
